RVBBIT: Dynamic Datascapes
If Superset, Tableau and Emacs had a baby behind Bret Victor's tool shed.
The data board. Not "dashboards" — a reactive visual data composer. Drag-in queries that materialize, Clojure that acts as a SQL table, hybrid canvas SQL REPL, themes because vibes, kits/plugins, signals/solvers, Rabbit Reactor (sharded deep-keypath atom watchers). Alpha 0.1.0 Aug 2024. ~311 stars.
Timeline
- VS Code as the display Edit queries and views live in the UI *or* your text editor. Two-way. The board is just data.
- 40 panels, every 10 seconds Overnight single-user stress test. 4 boards × 40 query/viz panels, SQL cache off. Observability as a load test.
- Clojure that acts as a SQL table SQL tables? Dope. Clojure code that *acts* as a SQL table? Also dope.
- The elevator pitch Like if Superset, Tableau, and Emacs had a baby out behind Bret Victor's tool shed.
- Dashboard tool shit test #143 Can it compose SQL, HTTP, mixed media? Yes. Everything speaks data.
- Why a dynamic theme system? Short answer — vibes.
- What if my dashboard could speak ETL? Drag a query in and materialize it. Flows as the board's circulatory system.
- The spice must flow
- Drag in to open, drag+F as a component The board is the focus. Flows are its external circulatory system. Default settings: 1990s hacker-movie OS.
- RVBBIT winter preview Culmination of years of boards and flows. Sound on, stay to the end. March… then it actually shipped in August.
- Living off savings Quit a good safe job. Dwindling economy. A year isolated finishing an ambitious side-project. The gap, from the inside.
- Hybrid canvas SQL REPL Introspect the namespace, SQLize rowset defs, slice/dice/viz beside the REPL.
- Human first, machine friendly Light data-only DSL means an LLM can add cards, tabs, viz. You could drag faster — that's not the point.
- RVBBIT 0.1.0 alpha Dynamic Datascapes. Culmination of the artist and the data person. Most hackable weird reactive visual data composer you've seen.
- HareZero Long-form, from scratch. Basic Bigfoot dashboard. The docs I actually wanted to write.
- Low-UI data desktop Direct manipulation instead of pills. Composition and view creation are one step. We show the code.
- Value Reactor goes external GET / SET / SUBSCRIBE the same reaction engine the UI uses. Feedback loop as protocol.
- XTDB bi-temporal scrubbing As-is vs as-was, on a slider. The convo is dead.
- Row vacuum Loading 6M CSV rows. Progress spinner? Lame. A loading node that *is* the rows. 246 likes, 30k views.
- Marimo dot wtf LLM building a reactive notebook in iterations. Grid dashboards, external DAG, still reactive.
- Fractal data viz Sure, why not.
